Al Hilal Kids Banking Game: Nurturing Financial Literacy through Play

My Role:

As the UI Designer for the Kids Banking Journey at Al Hilal, my mission was to create an engaging and educational gaming experience that instills good financial habits in children. Collaborating in an agile environment with a diverse team, including a UX designer, Product Owner, Developers, QA testers, and Scrum Master, I led the UI design efforts for the Kids Squad.

Process Overview:

RESEARCH

Commencing with research on kids and banking, I delved into demographics and identified key goals, focusing on imparting financial literacy. Brainstorming sessions with the team led to the formulation of features integrated into a gaming framework.

IDEATION

Team discussions refined the feature list, creating a roadmap for the Kids Banking Journey. User stories and use cases were meticulously crafted by the Product Owner, ready to be transformed into actionable design tasks.

DESIGN

The UX designer translated user stories into wireframes, laying the foundation for the UI design. Collaborative discussions with the UX designer ensured a seamless transition from wireframes to vibrant UI designs, taking into account the best user experience practices.

USABILITY TESTING

After a journey was created and the designs were reviewed by the team, some usability testing was conducted. I created a prototype out of my designs to test with the kids and made a list of the objectives for the testing session. I attended the online sessions as well so I can see in real time how the users are interacting with the design. After getting feedback from the testing sessions, we reviewed with the team which points we want to address and I made the changes, implemented and iterated as needed.

FEATURES OF THE KIDS GAME

Task Cloud, Gift Cloud, Profits Cloud:

  • Tasks assigned by parents are visualized through clouds in the game.

  • Gift clouds represent rewards, fostering positive reinforcement.

  • Profits clouds symbolize the financial gains tied to completed tasks.

Transaction History Screens:

  • Clear and visually appealing transaction history screens categorize activities into received, earned, and spent, aiding kids in understanding various banking concepts.

FURTHER CUSTOMIZATION

Interactive Characters:

  • To maintain engagement, interactive characters were introduced, allowing children to choose characters based on their preferences.

Costume Customization:

  • The addition of costume customization enables kids to earn points and purchase different outfits for their characters, enhancing personalization and encouraging task completion.

Character and costume selection designs adding a layer of personalization to keep kids entertained and motivated.

Conclusion:

The Al Hilal Kids Banking Game stands as a testament to the integration of education and entertainment. Through thoughtful UI design, the game transforms financial learning into an immersive and enjoyable experience. The collaboration across various teams and iterative design processes have resulted in a product that not only educates but captivates, making financial literacy a playful journey for the younger generation.
